School Safety Tips: A Check List for Parents
- Be sure that your child knows his/her phone number (including the area code). Teach them their address, your work number(s), and how to use 911 for emergencies. Make sure your child always have enough money to at least make a phone call in case of emergency. You could even get them a calling card. - Plan and practice a safe route to school or to the bus stop. Make sure it’s the most direct route, avoiding having to cross the street. Tell your child to stay away from places without a whole lot of people (i.e. parks, fields, vacant lots, etc.) - Whether they are walking, biking, or riding the bus, teach your children to obey all traffic signals, signs, safety rules and patrols. Remind them that during weather such as fog, rain, or snow, they need to use more caution. - Make sure they never walk alone. - Teach your child to never talk to strangers.
